There is something festive and precise at the same time about Marcel Wanders’ Circus for Alessi: an airtight glass jar that carries with it the echo of an imaginary world, printed on the transparent surface through screen printing that transforms an everyday object into a small scene to contemplate. The tinplate lid seals the interior with that tactile satisfaction found in well-made objects, while the glass - an ancient, honest material - allows a glimpse of the contents without revealing them completely. Marcel Wanders, one of the most recognizable Dutch designers of his generation, has always brought into his work an unstable and fascinating balance between ornament and function, between pop irony and artisanal rigor.
