Alessi — CO1369 | Branzi toothpick holder, pear wood and steel

There is something surprisingly poetic about an object created to hold toothpicks. Alessi's CO1369 transforms an almost invisible table accessory into a small domestic sculpture: warm, compact pearwood and polished steel embracing it with precise geometry, a form that invites the hand even before revealing its function. Compact dimensions — 12.5 × 9 × 9.5 cm — that settle on the table with the discretion of something that knows it has nothing to prove. The design bears the signature of Andrea Branzi, a central figure in Italian radical design and one of the founders of Archizoom Associati in the 1960s. Branzi spent decades reflecting on the boundary between a functional object and a cultural object, and in this piece too — created as part of the Officina Alessi collection — one can see his ability to imbue with meaning what serial production tends to neutralize. Officina Alessi is the most experimental laboratory of the Crusinallo manufacturer: a research space where function is always the starting point, never the destination.
