The 18/10 stainless steel basket is made from a sheet of metal worked on a lathe and then — a decisive, almost irreverent gesture — crushed. The result is an object that bears the memory of its transformation: rigid in its material, soft in its form. Compressioni belongs to the "Il Tornitore Matto" collection, designed by Paolo Ulian for Alessi. A Sardinian designer trained in Venice, Ulian is known for a poetic and conceptual approach to industrial design, capable of finding beauty in process waste and meaning in production gestures. In this series, turning — an ancient and precise technique — is diverted, contradicted, and freed from itself through controlled deformation. The resulting piece is not a mistake; it is a signature.
