Alessi — Le Tonale | Chipperfield Design Ceramic Plate

Alessi Tonale — Four Plates That Tell the Story of Color

There is something ancient yet contemporary about a table set with Tonale: the gray light of the glaze, the shape that seems to have always existed, the feeling that each plate already belongs to the history of the home. Designed by David Chipperfield for Alessi, this collection stems from the observation of Korean, Japanese, and Chinese vernacular ceramics, distilled into objects that do not display their design, but embody it.

Why We Chose It for You

Since 1921, Alessi has been a research laboratory in the applied arts: every piece bearing its name is the result of a dialogue between industry and design culture. Tonale is one of those collections in which this dialogue becomes quiet and profound. David Chipperfield - an architect of international standing - brings to the table the same sensibility with which he designs buildings: reduction, proportion, permanence. The reference to Morandi's work with color is not a biographical detail but the key to understanding the entire collection: the tones do not decorate, they define.
