Alessi — Plissé MDL08 W | White resin toaster by De Lucchi

There is something unusually poetic about a toaster. Plissé knows it, and asserts it with a formal presence that transforms the everyday morning gesture into a small aesthetic ritual. The pleated surface — from which the name derives — gives the white thermoplastic resin an almost sartorial, tactile texture that captures the light differently at every hour of the day. Absolute white, soft geometry, calibrated proportions: on the kitchen counter, Plissé does not disappear into the visual noise of everyday objects, but takes its place with discreet authority. The design bears the signature of Michele De Lucchi, a central figure in the history of contemporary Italian design, one of the leading figures of the Memphis movement in the 1980s and later one of the most refined interpreters of an industrial design capable of humanity. With Plissé, De Lucchi applies to small appliances the same sculptural attention he devotes to architecture and designer objects: the form that ripples the volume — the pleat, precisely — is not ornament, but visual structure and identity.
